Buying Tips
FABRIC CARE
Please note that these instructions are guidelines only.
Cotton
Pre-wash the fabric the same way you intend to wash the fabric once created in to a garment. Cotton is machine washable, but can also be dry cleaned. Cold hand wash or dry clean fancy weaves or embroidered cottons.
Linen
Dry cleaning is recommended to keep the colour of the fabric. If you do decide to wash the linen use a cool wash or hand wash (at your risk!). Dry coloured linens in the shade as sunlight will fade colour. Hot/warm iron.
Jersey knit
Pre-wash the fabric on a cold wash in the same way you intend to wash the fabric once created in to a garment. Do not tumble dry.
Rayon/Viscose
Cool machine wash or hand wash, in the same way you intend to wash the fabric once created into a garment. If you are machine washing select a cool delicate wash. Do not wring fabric. Rayon/Viscose can also be dry cleaned. Iron on reverse
BUYING FABRIC
We sell Fabric by units of length. Different fabric products do have different widths and you will find the width indicated in the relevant product description. The width can vary significantly between manufacturers so please do check the width before making any assumptions.
In terms of the length you purchase, we sell in whole units of 50cm (0.5 metres). Hence a quantity of 1 = 0.5 Metres, so should you require 1 metre you will need to order a quantity of 2. Fabric will be cut in a continuous length up to your ordered quantity.
Please note, at Sewing Gem we use professional photography to capture the fabric as accurately as possible, however different monitors can alter colours slightly. If you require any more product detail prior to ordering please email support@sewinggem.com.
BUYING PATTERNS
Please be aware that often traditional pattern sizing and store bought clothes (ready-to-wear) sizing are not the same. Having said that, the more contemporary indie (independent) pattern companies are now bucking this trend and releasing patterns with sizing more aligned to shop clothes.
In any case, it is recommended that you check your actual measurements before deciding which size range to order. Please see our sizing page for measurements.
Once you receive your pattern the finished pattern measurements can usually be found on the pattern pieces.
