The pattern features a unique rope detail that ties at the centre front and crosses over at the centre back. With both sleeve and sleeveless variations, plus pockets, the Ether Dress offers plenty of options and reflects Nita-Jane's experiences of living in Vietnam. Join us as we discuss all things Ether and share some helpful sewing tips!

Sewing the The Ether Dress: The Low-Down

Check out Kylie's awesome version here. I think her fabric is perfect for showcasing the sleeves!

I opted for the sleeved version because I loved the look of the butterfly sleeves. In hindsight, a more structured fabric would have provided better support for the sleeves. That said, I think this fabric is ideal for a beach cover-up. Using it as a beach cover up also removes any concern about not wearing a bra with the dress (due to the open back).

Top Tips

When we spoke to Nita-Jane from Pattern Fantastique she suggested hand stitching the rope in place as this often helps to keep everything when it should be. Also find a friend when it comes to getting the rope in the perfect place at the back - this will save you a lot of time! As mentioned above if you're making the sleeved version make sure you've chosen a fabric with a bit of stiffness to it if you want the sleeves to hold.

Both Kylie and I ended up with rope that we weren't particularly happy with. Mine was literally fraying before my eyes. It's definitely worth taking the time to find the right rope for this dress as it's such a feature. Fortunately Nita-Jane has also put together a rope kit for the Ether Dress, which takes the hassle out of finding the perfect rope.

Final Thoughts

The Ether Dress is incredibly versatile, whether you’re looking for a casual beach look or a dressed-up evening outfit with a high-quality fabric. There are definitely plenty of styling options to explore. Both Kylie and I are excited to try making it without the sleeves next!
